A Marathon

As a staple in the year of Miss Staten Island, this Puerto Rican girl became Irish for a day and got to ride in the St. Patty's Day Parade.  Although, slightly chilly, I got to celebrate with everyone and I even got the opportunity to take some pictures with some handsome service men.  All in all it was a great day that continued to get better!

Riding with my beautiful Star Princess!

Don't mind if I do...

The crazy DeBetta clan out in the cold to support me as usual! Thanks Guys :)

I broke up my day with a little defrosting and a quick nap with the love of my life Martini (my teacup french poodle) and then began to get ready for the best night ever, a continuation of the Miss America Homecoming events!

After getting all dolled up, I got in the car and headed to my favorite girl in Brooklyn's house, Christina Moore!  We headed to the show and were immediately greeted by the forever fabulous Pink & Pepper gift bags and even got the opportunity to take a quick photo opp :)

The ever fabulous Christina Moore and I

We were then treated to the show of a lifetime sprinkled with former Miss America's Susan Powell, Caressa Cameron, and Kate Shindel and the crazy talented top five!  We then shifted to full on party mode when the DJ started bumping some serious dance tunes.  It was a long day but it was filled to the brim with friends, crowns, and some crazy happy New Yorkers with their Miss America.

Miss America Homecoming!!

First I got to start my day off with this view of the Verrazano.

Habitat For Humanity with Ericka Dunlap (Miss America 2004) and Susan Powell (Miss America 1981)

This day was quite the marathon but it was such a bast.  As soon as I got to the site, I was put straight to work on the wall featured above in the picture.  A fellow volunteer and myself began taping the outline for the design on the wall.  I got to hear first hand about how habitat for humanity helped a woman own her own condo, and how she's partially repaying them in volunteer time.

Later on in the day we were joined by Miss America herself Mallory Hagan as well as the rest of the top ten.  It was a wonderful precursor to the events to come the following night.  We were fortunate enough to spend a lovely morning, giving back to people in New York with many phenomenal representatives of the Miss America Organization.

Eger Nursing Home Sing Along

Talk about feeling loved!  I have been fortunate enough to befriend a phenomenal asset to Staten Island's Eger Nursing home, Annette.  She has not only become a wonderful friend, but she is the coordinator of fun at the nursing home so when I suggested coming to visit and sing a few songs she was more than delighted to help me.  On the afternoon that I went, I was greeted with more love and open arms than I knew what to do with.  The residents were thrilled, making my time spent there all the more fun.  I got to do what makes me happiest and sing a bunch of Judy Garland, and Barbara Streisand songs.  At times, the visit turned into a sing along so I knew for sure the men and women of this prestigious audience were having a good time.  After I got through my songs, I got to spend some time chatting with the residents only to be met with an outpour of well wishes and additions to my cheering squad at Miss New York.  I left realizing how wonderful people can be, and so proud to have such wonderful residents living on Staten Island.

“Dance is the hidden language of the soul” ― Martha Graham

I had the wonderful opportunity to be able to present the awards at the Dance Oscars on Staten Island which were designed to display the talents of various dance schools on Staten Island.  I have to admit I had ZERO idea this event would be as extravagant as it was.  From the red carpet, to Joan Rivers this event was a blast to be part of.

I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw something back. Maya Angelou

This wasn't easy.

The beauty of the Miss America Organization is the opportunity to choose a personal platform and be able to represent that cause in an extremely meaningful and remarkable way.  However, like most, my chosen platform is not the only cause I hold dear to my heart.

This past saturday, I was in my bathroom with some Hunter Hayes Pandora on while drying my hair.  As I parted the next section to dry, I looked at my self in the mirror and saw it. Immediately I called my mom into my room and had her affirm what I already knew to be true.

My alopecia is back...

I was diagnosed with alopecia areata for the first time in Kindergarden.  I was a six year old wrongly being accused of pulling my eyelashes out, and thus caused to sleep with eyepatches until it was later discovered that I had alopecia.  For those of you who aren't familiar with alopecia, its an autoimmune disease where your body attacks hair follicles in concentrated areas or in more serious cases in someones whole body.  Thankfully, my case has never been quite that serious, but being a girl it hasn't made things easy.  My condition, when I was younger, was easily treated with a topical gel applied to my eyelids.  As I grew older, the spots got larger, more frequent, and were slightly more stubborn.  Each spot (I feel like a dalmatian calling them spots but its the best word I can come up with) now means a series of injections in whatever location the alopecia has taken to. I have received injections in both eyelids and my scalp more times than I can count, and it still isn't any less painful nor am I used to them by now.

I debated writing this blog because naturally, as a female in her twenties, highlighting a flaw isn't necessarily something I'm excited about doing, but thinking about it I felt I had to.  Not because I had some "world peace" type of pageantry attitude, but because if this organization taught me anything, its that you'll never give yourself a fair shot at anything if you don't lay it all out there.  The women who year after dreadful twenty-fourth year compete to represent these prestigious titles are dedicating their time in preparations to have the chance to hold the microphone this crown comes with.

Now, microphone in hand, I'm empowered to highlight something in my life that I literally have spent my time combing over (pun intended).  I am so fortunate that I have had the luxury of being able to hide the small bald spots and glue on some lashes when they're missing.

We are all human.  We go through stuff.  We all have our insecurities, but they make us who we are.  I have learned that no matter how much you want to crawl up into a ball and not leave your house until your eyelashes grow back, life must go on.  You're never going to be the only one going through something so remember your compassion for people.  And, the moments where we choose to not let those little imperfections keep us down are where the magic happens.  Heres to making some magic this year :)

HUGE CONGRATS to the newly crowned girls of the city! Yesterday we welcomed Miss New York City and fellow MAOT vet Acacia Courtney, Miss Cosmopolitan Kira Kazantsev, and Miss Metropolitan Melissa Philips. Three AMAZING women I cannot wait to spend the week with this July.

The trouble with weather forecasting is that it's right too often for us to ignore it and wrong too often for us to rely on it. ~Patrick Young

Alas, we meet again Groundhogs Day.  5:00 AM my alarm went off and I began to get ready for an experience of a lifetime.  Three layers of clothes, crown, banner, and sunglasses (apparently my half awake self figured I'd need them eventually) my mom and I were out the door on our way to the Staten Island Zoo home of Chuck the groundhog.

Chuck, the morning groundhog, about to be reunited with his girlfriend.  No really, I couldn't make that  up if I tried.

Brief side note:

Dear Chuck,
Consider sleeping in next year.
Love Always,
Amanda

Shortly after arriving there, I had a lovely conversation with the Borough President in the middle of the fish exhibit.  Now would be a good time to mention it was about three degrees outside (it was 20 but for dramatic purposes lets pretend it was three).  Ok, so I made my way to the bandstand where I was soon accompanied with other dignitaries including Alyssa Miss Richmond County and my remarkable little sister queen Ashley Miss Staten Island's Outstanding Teen.  We stood on stage throughout the ceremony and shared a few laughs about Chuck and last years antics when he bit the mayor.

We were then led inside where we had the opportunity to take some pictures and spend some time with the kids who woke up early on a saturday to share this experience. Kudos children of Staten Island!!

Chuck quickly became a crowd favorite because he revealed SPRING IS ON THE HORIZON!!  With an 80% accuracy rate, Chuck, I'm holding out for a hero and I really hope it's you.  Bring on the warmth! Have you gotten the gist that I'm not a fan of winter? Good!  Frigid weather aside, it was a wonderful day with even better company.  Until we meet again Mr. Chuck...

Happy Groundhogs Day!

To Whom Much Is Given, Much Is Expected

Having being honored with this title I fully expected to take on this job and "hit the ground running" so to speak.  Admittedly, I hadn't fully descended from cloud nine before  appearances started piling up and reality started setting in.  This really happened.  This past week has been so full of thoughtful words and a warm genuine embrace back into the Miss New York family.  I am so grateful for the abundance of opportunities that have come my way in such a short amount of time.  Thank you again for such a warm welcoming, I could not have wished for a better way to start my reign.

Now that I've successfully gushed yet again, my first appearance!

So, earlier in the week I received an email asking if I was available to film a segment for "This Week on Staten Island" for NY1 News.  I'm pretty sure the conversation went something like, "Umm, I'll make myself available."  To say I was excited is an understatement, what a way to kick off this year.  To have seen (for the first time) clips of both my talent and that indescribable moment when they said my name winning this title was another beautiful reminder that this is all still real.  I was able to speak about my platform and the wonderful traits the Miss America Organization instills in women.

Trust in what you love, continue to do it, and it will take you where you need to go. Natalie Goldberg

What words can I find to fully encompass all the blessings that have come to me this weekend.  I sit here rendered speechless by the outpour of congratulatory messages, and could not be more humbled.  I cannot wait to begin my year of service to Staten Island and I hope I can make you all very proud.

This year, I hope to be a voice for women battling cancer such as my mother, as well as raising money and awareness for the Children's Miracle Network through the prestigious Miss America Organization.  I have already begun work with the TEAL Organization and look forward to this organizations many events and fundraisers, aiding ovarian cancer research.

That being said, I wanted to tell you all a little about my journey to becoming Miss Staten Island 2013, here it goes:

For those of you who don't know, my platform "Strength In Knowledge: Women Fighting Cancer Together" centers around women living with cancer and celebrating their strength, femininity, and grace.  My mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at twenty-two, just a few weeks after finding out she was pregnant with me.  After two doctors told her to terminate the pregnancy and begin chemotherapy right away, she consulted the late Dr. Weinstein who took her hand in his and said "Ivette, you will live a long happy life, watching that baby grow up."  Well, to say God is good is an understatement because twenty-three years later my mother and I are still here and I've been afforded the opportunity to represent her and women like her though the platform of the Miss America Organization.

THANK YOUS

First and foremost Mom and Dad, thank you for your unwavering support of my dreams, we have a big year ahead and it means the world to know you'll be there every step of the way.

The Folger women, you are both heaven sent.  I loved being able to share this win with you and continue my journey with you two in my corner.  WE DID IT!!

Christina Moore, thank you for keeping my nerves in check and making sure my backstage life ran as smoothly as possible, its an honor to have you as a friend.

LuLu Belle's Boutique THANK YOU for making me feel like a queen from the moment I put on my gown.  My stunning red Tony Bowls was the FIRST gown these ladies picked for me to try on and it was magic.  I couldn't be more grateful for your help and support along the way.

Katie Boyd!! When you said you'd kick my butt into shape boy you weren't kidding.  You are not only extremely talented at making women look and feel their best, but your continuous motivation and faith allowed me to FINALLY be excited to get on stage for swim suit.  I cannot stress how much that has mean to me, thank you.

Kandice Pelletier my Miss New York sister queen and swimsuit designer.  Thank you for making me the perfect bathing suit to compete in.  You are one of the best role models a girl could ask for!

Thank you Miss Staten Island Organization for providing me with a $3,000 scholarship for school so I can continue my schooling in dental hygiene.

Friends, family, and my beloved Staten Island.  Your gracious welcoming of me into this prestigious position has been filled with more love than I ever thought my heart could hold.  From the very bottom of my heart, THANK YOU for this honor.
