Trust in what you love, continue to do it, and it will take you where you need to go. Natalie Goldberg

What words can I find to fully encompass all the blessings that have come to me this weekend.  I sit here rendered speechless by the outpour of congratulatory messages, and could not be more humbled.  I cannot wait to begin my year of service to Staten Island and I hope I can make you all very proud.

This year, I hope to be a voice for women battling cancer such as my mother, as well as raising money and awareness for the Children's Miracle Network through the prestigious Miss America Organization.  I have already begun work with the TEAL Organization and look forward to this organizations many events and fundraisers, aiding ovarian cancer research.

That being said, I wanted to tell you all a little about my journey to becoming Miss Staten Island 2013, here it goes:

For those of you who don't know, my platform "Strength In Knowledge: Women Fighting Cancer Together" centers around women living with cancer and celebrating their strength, femininity, and grace.  My mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at twenty-two, just a few weeks after finding out she was pregnant with me.  After two doctors told her to terminate the pregnancy and begin chemotherapy right away, she consulted the late Dr. Weinstein who took her hand in his and said "Ivette, you will live a long happy life, watching that baby grow up."  Well, to say God is good is an understatement because twenty-three years later my mother and I are still here and I've been afforded the opportunity to represent her and women like her though the platform of the Miss America Organization.
